Choosing a lawnmower doesn't seem too difficult, but for sure, when you get down to the details, it can seem overwhelming to some. As we have a dedicated customer care phone number (01507 499198), customers are calling to discuss choosing the most suitable machine. Recently, we have had plenty of enquiries from customers deciding between our 17-inch mowers, including our new hand-push PPLM-17150-HD and self-drive versions PPLM -17150-SD./
A Fresh Design
The design of the engine, cutting blades and full-steel chassis directly impacts the lawnmower's performance. A well-balanced machine with the correct horsepower, cutting width, and cutting height adjustment options will deliver consistent and high-quality results across various terrains and grass types, and that's what you've got with both our self-drive and hand-push versions of these frankly fantastic mowers. But what are the pros and cons between the two?
Hand-Push Lawnmowers
Advantages
These are generally lower cost which is a big positive. They are easier to maintain because there are fewer moving parts to be concerned with. The engines are a little quieter, too, and the machine is a little lighter, too, meaning that they aren't all about toiling across the lawn!
Dis-Advantages
If you have a sloping garden, a hand-push mower isn't the best as it requires more effort than self-drive machines - for obvious reasons. They do require more physical effort in general by their very nature, and as a consequence, they have a slower mowing speed. But are you mowing your lawn in a rush, or enjoying being out in the garden, hopefully in the sunshine?
Self-Drive Lawnmowers
Advantages
Clearly, with a self-drive mechanism in place, these machines require less physical effort to get the lawn done. They can cover larger areas more quickly than hand-push mowers, reducing overall mowing time. The self-drive mechanism also means they are a great choice if you have sloping or uneven ground to mow.
Dis-Advantages
Initially, self-drive machines are generally more expensive, it's true. It could be that (depending on the manufacturer) they require a little more care and attention in terms of maintenance, but nothing more than your general requirements for a four-stroke petrol lawnmower. They are generally heavier, but with the self-drive mech in place, it tends to cancel it out!
Check for Useful Features
A mower mows, of course, but it's worth checking that your model has great features, too. Check to see if it includes a mulching port—you can feed your lawn the natural way. Also, check that the mower has a grass collection bag with a decent volume—this can save a lot of padding back and forth. In short, checking for these extra features can mean the difference between a good lawnmower and a great one.
